It’s a long way from peeing on a stick!
Yesterday, Tandem released the ability to deliver insulin from your smartphone*! 🎉
Today, 43 years ago, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
To me, this feels meaningful.
Here’s why:
TECHNOLOGY
Before:
🔸In 1979, there was no home blood testing. I had to pee on a stick to test my blood.
Now:
🔹I can glance at my continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to see my blood sugars, and it communicates with my insulin pump to help prevent high and low blood sugars.
🔹With this upgrade, I can keep my pump comfortably in my pocket (or wherever I want!), open the T:Connect app on my phone, punch some numbers, and my pump will start delivering insulin in my pocket!
🔹It highlights how FAR we’ve come in the advancements in T1D technology.
MINDSET
Before:
🔸I used to think life was completely unfair because I had T1D.
🔸This meant, if I picked the slow line at CVS, I would think “of course I did, bad things always happen to ME”. Or I got a C on a test, “It’s so unfair, I’m the ONLY one who studied and did badly”.
Now:
🔹I know it’s not the T1D that makes me feel bad, it’s my thoughts about T1D (life is unfair).
🔹I know that because I was thinking “life is unfair”, it permeated into every OTHER aspect of my life (tests, CVS, etc.).
🔹I can choose new thoughts, that create new feelings.
🔹I can now see the 10 others that were standing in the slow line with me at CVS, or the 15 other students who also got Cs on the test (or worse).
🔹I can now see that I chose to be a victim. I NO longer choose that anymore.
🔹Today, I’m choosing to be GRATEFUL, for 43 years of healthy, complication-free living. I’m grateful for my closed-loop insulin pump and all the advancements coming down the pike.

PS The ability to deliver insulin from the app is SO cool! For my coffee this morning, I left my pump in my pocket, bolused from my phone, and sipped away! ☕☕☕. If you have the Tslim, and didn’t automatically receive the email, I’d check out Tandem’s website and see if you’re eligible for the upgrade!
PPS Picture is of me at the Joslin Diabetes Center, 3 weeks after diagnosis (I think that’s a bandaid on my arm!).
