One JDRF summit at a time
I participated in the 2022 JDRF TypeOne Summit on Saturday in four awesome ways:
1. I had a table set up where people stopped by to talk about T1D Life Coaching.
2. I was a panelist in a session geared toward adults living with T1D.
3. I represented JDRF’s DC Board of Directors, mixing and mingling with volunteers and staff.
4. I attended a networking event after the event had wrapped.
It was an incredible day! Lots of hugs and catch-ups after 2+ years of zoom calls and virtual events.
But more than that, the day was a personal triumph.
Here’s why:
Making it happen
1. When I first decided to become a Life Coach so that I could help people with T1D, I set a few tangible goals. One of them was to participate in the JDRF Summit as a speaker/panelist. In my mind, this event is the cream of the crop in terms of outreach events.
And in under a year, I made it happen.
2. I’ll never forget sitting in a breakout session at the Summit in 2020, listening to Dr. Argento (a renowned Endocrinologist) speak. I kept thinking. “I would love to have him as my doctor, but I bet he’s not taking new patients. I’ll just suffer and stay with my current doctor”.
I wasn’t willing to fight for my health. I wasn’t willing to fight for myself.
A year later, I’m seeing Dr. Levitt, a doctor in his practice, who is AMAZING (also has T1D) and is absolutely life-changing.
Facing your fears
3. Although I was excited to achieve my goal, and speak at the Summit / be on a panel, I was VERY nervous.
I was scared. But I did it anyway.
Facing your fears, sitting in discomfort, and knowing you will be OK, is one of the most important lessons a person can learn.
How did I accomplish the above?
🔹Knowing that a feeling can’t kill me. It’s just a vibration in my body.
🔹Being scared. And doing it anyway.
🔹Know that thoughts are not true. They are optional. I assumed Dr. Argento wouldn’t want me as a new patient. Once I challenged that thought and did the research. I found out there was another Dr in his practice. JUST as amazing. Who WAS taking new patients!
🔹Setting goals, BELIEVING that goal had already been accomplished. KNOWING it was already done. And watching as it came true.
🔹Believing in myself
🔹Sitting in discomfort
As I was chatting with people at the Summit, something slipped of my mouth that I love: A life coach is like a counselor and a project manager wrapped in one. I help you figure out WHY you are in pain. What YOU want. And then I help you GET there — coaching you and encouraging you the whole way.
