What a simple thought can do to calm your nerves… It’s the SMILES, not the MILES

This past weekend, I participated in a fundraiser called the “JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes”. JDRF is an organization dedicated to funding T1D research, and the Ride is a 3-day event that raises money for T1D research.

On Saturday morning, I was joined by approximately 240 other riders, all gathered at the starting line, ready to get started for a day of biking.

When I suddenly realized my continuous glucose monitor (CGM) stopped working properly (the no reading alert), which means I couldn’t read my blood sugars on my Tslim pump (a very important feature when heading off for a long bike ride!).

I could feel my panic rising 😫.

So, I took a deep breath, and thought of all the things that were IN my control:
🔹I could manually test my blood sugar by pricking my finger
🔹I could pull aside and let other riders go ahead of me
🔹I could flag almost any other rider down for help (it was a JDRF event after all!)

Then, I reminded myself that my thoughts create my feelings, and I figured out the exact thought that was creating my sense of panic:
🔸I’m going to get behind and everyone will leave me

And I remembered:
💪🏻 This is a RIDE, it’s not a RACE, I’m in no rush
💪🏻 This is about the SMILES, not the MILES

And I felt totally calm 🙌🏻

I pulled my bike over, tested my blood sugar, and saw that I was at a safe sugar to start the ride. I got back into the mix and had plenty of time to join my comrades before the ride even started. All was good🚲🎉💪🏻🙌🏻 🚲!
