Growing up, I always wondered why other people with T1D seemed so FINE.
Why didn’t they struggle the way I did? Why aren’t they as angry as I am? Why are they so well adjusted? What’s wrong with me?
I would then get mad at them for being so darn OK, while simultaneously beating myself up for feeling this way.
Do you do the same thing? Do you feel this way?
First let me say, you are NOT alone! ❤️
Then, a few things:
1. Nothing good comes out of comparing yourself to others. It only makes you feel worse. As Roosevelt says, it’s the thief of joy. If you must compare, compare yourself to yourself. Celebrate your wins, no matter how small.
2. Feelings are ok. It’s ok to feel ANY way you want. Want to be mad? Be mad! The more you resist your feelings, the stronger they fight. What resists persists.
3. Every journey is different. There’s no magic T1D journey. I’ve heard it ALL. “You were diagnosed at 3, so it’s no big deal because you don’t know any better” or “you were diagnosed at 3, how horrible you never knew life before T1D”! There is NO magic formula that = struggle vs. no struggle. Your journey is your journey. Period. Be kind to yourself and try not to beat yourself up for YOUR journey. It yours. ❤️
