Saying “I’m fine” And What’s Really Undernearth It

If you live with Type 1 Diabetes, you’ve probably said it a hundred times.
“I’m fine.”
You say it to your doctor, your family, your friends or to yourself.

And in some ways, it feels true.
You’re functioning, you’re managing, and you’re getting through the day.

But underneath that “fine” you may feel like you’re drowning.
Because the truth is: T1D asks a lot of you.

It asks you to be vigilant.
It asks you to think ahead.
It asks you to constantly calculate, adjust, plan, correct, and anticipate.

And while the world sees someone who is “doing great,” they don’t always see the invisible mental load it takes to look fine.

You don’t want to sound like you’re complaining.

This is one of the most common things I hear from clients and others:
“I don’t want to sound dramatic.”
“It could be worse.”
“Other people have it harder.”
“I don’t want to burden anyone.”

So you minimize, you push through, and you keep moving. But over time, that emotional weight starts to pile up.

You might notice:

  • A constant low-level anxiety buzzing under the surface
  • Moments where you feel flat or disconnected
  • A sense of burnout that you can’t fully explain
  • Feeling like you’re going through the motions, but not really living

Suppressing the hard stuff doesn’t make it go away.

When no one teaches you how to process the emotional weight of T1D, it doesn’t disappear, it just hides under the “I’m fine.”
And often it comes out in other ways: like snapping at people you love, feeling burnt out, emotionally checked out, not wanting to do anything diabetes related, over-eating, disappearing into your phone, and so on.

This doesn’t mean you’re weak or broken. It means you’re human.

When you live with a chronic condition like T1D, no one trains you to handle the emotional load that comes on top of the medical tasks. That’s where emotional coaching comes in.

You deserve space to not be fine.

In my coaching work, we gently start to unpack that invisible weight.

  • We create a safe space where you don’t have to minimize or explain.
  • We name the hard stuff without judgment.
  • We build tools to regulate your nervous system and calm the constant fight-or-flight state.
  • We help you reconnect to who you are beyond diabetes.

Because you’re allowed to feel better.
You’re allowed to release the mental load you’ve been quietly carrying for years.
And you don’t have to do it alone.

If this resonates with you, and you’re ready to explore what emotional support could look like, I’m here. My coaching is a space to not be fine, lay it all down, breathe, and finally make space for yourself again.
