A thought repeated over and over becomes a belief.
So when you tell yourself over and over that diabetes is a 24/7 disease, it becomes harder to think about anything else.
My challenge to you:
Become a detective for the opposite of that story.
When are you NOT thinking about diabetes?
Pay attention to the next time you’re enjoying a hot shower, talking about the Golden Bachelor, getting lost in thought, or being present in any moment that is not T1D.
Even if you’re counting seconds, minutes, moments. They add up to a new story.
I used to tell myself the story that T1D is a round-the-clock, 24/7 disease because we live with it 100% of the time, and because it often feels like we’re forced to make decisions literally every second of the day. But when I realized the power of my thoughts, I realized this story was holidng me back and it’s not actually true. There are plenty of moments I’m not actually thinking about my diabetes.
So I started paying attention to other things in my life, and the whole world opened up. I started noticing other fun things in my life like reality TV, friends, family, my fascination with mental health, and so on. Just try it and see what happens!
