What living with Type 1 Diabetes might feel like on Thanksgiving tomorrow:
😩Stressful, trying to make decisions to balance a carb-heavy meal, eaten over a long period of time at a non-standard time
😩 The pressure to be grateful and happy can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, and anxiety, especially if you’re struggling with your blood sugars on a day focused on food
😩 Spending time with family who don’t understand T1D can add to your stress
😩 Intrusive thoughts like “T1D will ruin my Thanksgiving” will create negative feelings
😩 Any uncertainty around the holiday, can create stress. Living with T1D can add an extra layer of uncertainty and stress, especially if you’re struggling with your sugars or the complex decisions required.
If you’re feeling stressed at Thanksgiving, here are a few simple things you can do in the moment to feel better. (They may sound small, but they will help):
🔹Breath! (2 breaths in, 4 out)
🔹Step away from the crowd and move (quick walk around the block or house)
🔹Connect with someone you trust (text a friend, hug a family member)
🔹Help clean up
🔹Play with any of the kids that are there or suggest a board/card game
What have I missed? Feel free to share. Remember, you’re not alone. Although everyone’s journey with T1D is unique, we all have similar struggles and many of us will be going through a similar journey tomorrow.
I hope you’re able to enjoy yourself tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate! 💖🦃
