I love Six Flags

I Love Six Flags

I love amusement parks. So when my friend John organized a trip to Six Flags, I got really excited. There’s nothing better than the thrill of a roller coaster, your stomach dropping to your feet, and that overall sense of being a kid again. But my excitement was quickly tempered when I remembered about the water park. My insulin pump isn’t waterproof, and it dawned on me I wouldn’t be able to go. The thought “diabetes ruins everything” entered my mind, and immediately I was upset. I was frustrated that I’d be left out because of type 1 diabetes (t1d).

In the past, I would have continued feeling frustrated, I would have politely declined, and I would have missed out on a potentially really fun trip.

But now I know better. The pump not being waterproof did not cause my frustration.  My thought “diabetes ruins everything” created my frustration. And feeling frustrated would have caused me to give up, stay home, and miss out.

So instead, I thought “Let’s see how I CAN go”. And immediately I felt empowered, and I took the following actions:

βœ” I asked the group if they planned on going to the water park

βœ” I googled the park to understand how it was laid out

βœ” I called the park to ask about the locker situation

I learned where the lockers were in the water park AND learned that the group had no interest in going to the water park. Many of them felt insecure about walking around in bathing suits. (So we ALL have insecurities! The thoughts in their brains were causing feelings of insecurity. More on that later!).

Because I chose a new thought:

πŸ‘Œ I felt empowered

πŸ‘Œ I figured out an answer

πŸ‘Œ I created a NEW result for myself I am SO excited for my Six Flags trip next week!
