Have you ever found yourself with low blood sugar, eating so uncontrollably, only to later come to your senses surrounded by empty wrappers as if you’d been in a foggy blackout?
It’s not your fault.
It’s human biology.
Low blood sugars can feel scary, cloud your judgment, and spike your hunger. This fear can send your nervous system into a survival mode like fight or flight, impairing rational thought, and often resulting in overeating and fluctuating blood sugar levels for the rest of the day
Here are some simple steps to help regulate your nervous system so you can feel calmer, think more clearly, and avoid over-treating your low in the first place.
3 simple steps (once you’ve treated your low)
✨Take a few slow, deep breaths
Deep breaths reactivate the nervous system, sending cues to both your brain and body that there is no immediate danger
✨Reassure yourself that you are, in fact, safe (make sure you’ve properly treated the inital low)
Find a thought that works for you and repeat it over and over. Ex. “I ate what I needed to eat, I am safe”
✨Remind yourself that the low is temporary
Find a thought that works for you and repeat it over and over Ex. “This will be over as quickly as it came”
Put these in your phone, on a post-it on the fridge, or somewhere readily available to remember for next time you’re low!
