You can either be curious or judgemental. You can’t be both at the same time.
I’m sure you’ve heard the famous quote “Be curious, not judgemental” or seen the Ted Lasso dart scene. If you haven’t seen it or watched it in a while (HERE), it’s just so so good. (PS The quote is not actually Walt Whitman’s, I figured this out because I was curious and googled it!).
Judgment means you have enough evidence to make a final and binding conclusion about someone. So if you’re curious, you are NOT in judgment. Period.
I love this because I’m in judgment more often than I’d like to admit.
I used to judge people for talking too much about their pets. If I had been curious and asked WHY they loved their pets or asked more about what their pet brought to their lives, I wouldn’t have judged them and maybe I would have understood the AMAZINGNESS that it is to own a pet. Now that I have a cat, I have to hold myself back from emailing pictures of her every day! 😻😽🥰
Most importantly, do you have enough information to make a judgment about yourself? If you stay curious (and compassionate), knowing that we’re always changing, perhaps you’ll be able to stay curious, not judgemental when it comes to your beautiful self. 💗
